National Coding Week at the Digital Greenhouse
National Coding Week celebrations set to bring a week of digital events to Guernsey.
On Monday 17th September, The Digital Greenhouse will be kicking off a series of events to celebrate National Coding Week 2018, sponsored for the fifth year by JT.
National Coding Week has in five years grown into a truly international event. The event’s aim is to inspire people to learn coding and other digital skills during the week, with the ambition that these ‘taster’ sessions will be, for some, the first steps in a new career in the growing digital sector.
The week is being organised and based in the Digital Greenhouse, co-constructed by a range of industry experts, government and support agencies including; Barclays Eagle Labs, C5 Alliance, First Central Group, JT and National Coding Week. This pan-sector approach has led to a diverse week of free lunchtime and evening events.
Barclay’s Eagle Lab kicks off the week with their Senior Cyber Citizens workshop on Monday lunchtime and Tuesday evening. The GTAs first Digital Leadership course also launches, with two days of intensive development for Industry leaders across the Island. Tuesday lunchtime hosts a thought provoking and inspirational talk on Women in Tech supported by C5 Alliance. Wednesday will include a lunchtime Digital Marketing Meetup looking at Mobile Marketing with experts from Indulge Media and Aspire2be, followed by an evening FinTech Guernsey event where representatives from Resolution IT will be talking about cloud technologies.
Thursday Martin from GardenTags Jersey will be running a lunchtime seminar to explore Machine Learning concepts for image recognition in app development and C5 Alliance continue their support by delivering a hands on workshop on Python programming midday on Friday.
An exciting addition for 2018 is the mobile Fab Lab, Manche Lab, which is making it’s way over from Normandy. This mobile makerspace had the latest in fabrication technology and will be based in Market Square on Thursday from 11:30 to 4:30 with free entry for those who want to learn more.
- Lucy Kirby (Head of Digital, Economic Development) who is the Guernsey’s Ambassador for NCW said,
“This year we are looking to bring a diverse range of activities and experiences to Guernsey for National Coding Week. We hope to inspire and spark people’s interest in technology and deliver a week of learning, creativity and knowledge sharing. Once again we are extremely pleased to have the support of local industry partners to both share their digital innovation and impart skills across the range of activities to celebrate National Coding Week.”
Organisers of National Coding Week say, “The UK digital economy has grown enormously in the past 8 years and clusters of digital businesses are springing up everywhere. It has been reported that 50% of digital product developers are self-taught and as many as 83% of app developers have taught themselves. There are now more people working in tech jobs in the south east of England than the whole of California but there is a skills shortage and many adults could contribute to the digital economy if they had the confidence to get started.”
