Meet the 2024 Startup Academy

Our Startup Academy launched its 2024 cohort this month with a wide range of digital ventures having applied. The successful cohort of businesses spans across FinTech, HealthTech, MediaTech and more, showing exciting potential future growth within their sectors. 

The 11 Guernsey businesses accepted to the business accelerator programme have started their 10-week journey, developing their ventures with the aid of experts in the field from venture-building partners Blenheim Chalcot, this program offers an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to develop their products, refine their business models, and accelerate their path to market.

They will learn about mapping opportunities for innovation, how to make informed decisions and avoid wasting resources in their pursuit of success, early unit economics and how they affect different business models, how to build and present a business case and more. 

The first session of the Guernsey Startup Academy started the week of the 10th of April and runs on until the end of June concluding in a pitch presentation evening.

The Startup Academy is a powerful 10-week programme designed to propel early-stage Guernsey businesses from concept to market. Led by Blenheim Chalcot's renowned Red Team, the programme equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Participants dive into critical topics like customer insights, unit economics, and innovative business models. Through a combination of structured sessions and workshops, the Startup Academy provides an immersive environment where founders can refine their ventures and build a solid foundation for growth. This all-in-one platform will address the cumbersome process of managing multiple operational systems by integrating HR/admin, various areas of compliance, CRM, patient management, and accounting/payment software into a single, user-friendly solution. Additionally, reducing the barrier to entry for new clinics means expanding the already sizeable market.
Our system not only solves the problem of manual processes and ensures accuracy and compliance but also supports business growth from inception through scaling. By eliminating operational inefficiencies, we enable practitioners to focus more on patient care and less on administrative tasks, creating substantial value for our clients. Our target customers are new and existing medical aesthetic and private health businesses in the UK, whom we reach through targeted digital marketing, industry partnerships, and direct sales efforts. About the Founder:
I have 10 years of experience in sales/marketing and 10 years in science/healthcare with commensurate degrees in Marketing and Biomedical Sciences. I began working in medical aesthetics when I arrived in Guernsey in 2019 as part of the team that launched Clever Clinic. I have witnessed firsthand the struggles that new and established clinics face in the market and believe we are well-positioned to offer an effective solution.

Laura Eccleston

About the Founder:

After graduating with a Biomedical Sciences degree, Laura worked as a business manager for her family's medical practice, of which she is now a director. Over the last several years she has grown the practice as well as her experience in both commercial and patient care areas. Her familiarity with the regulatory environment and broad expertise in practice management, training, and clinical technology is vital to the planned business.

About the Founder:

With over 10 years of experience in the IT sector, I am a seasoned Cloud Computing expert and consultant. I hold an MSc in Advanced Computer Science with distinction and have secured 18 certifications, including several at the Microsoft Expert level, which demonstrate my deep knowledge and technical prowess.

My background as a Cloud Consultant has equipped me with the skills to design, implement, and manage robust cloud solutions that enhance business efficiency and innovation. I specialize in translating complex technical requirements into actionable strategies that drive operational excellence and create sustainable competitive advantages.

Hayden Morgan

Founder of Amberisk Consulting

What’s your business and the story behind it:

Amberisk, your trusted partner in Regulatory Compliance, has been serving wealth management businesses in Guernsey since 2016. From large multinationals to agile startups. In the past, risk management often involved juggling disparate Excel spreadsheets. But not anymore!

Our expertise lies in empowering businesses to confidently navigate complex regulatory landscapes. With cutting-edge technology and expert guidance, Amberisk ensures operational excellence, driving sustainable growth while keeping compliance at the forefront.

About the Founder:

Hayden Morgan is a seasoned professional with 20 years of experience in governance, risk, and compliance, specializing in anti-money laundering and financial crime. Prior to this, he has worked on Mainframes, VAX/VMS and software development and support. His expertise spans across fiduciary, investment, funds, and banking sectors, with a focus on building resilient and compliant solutions.

Hayden has held various roles, including MLRO, MLCO, and Compliance Officer, and has been involved in developing IT systems and a cloud-based solution for wealth management. He holds a BSc in IT and Computing, and his interests include programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and technologies such as PostgreSQL and Nginx.

Jack Quick

Founders of Kloakify

What’s your business and the story behind it:

Kloakify helps people to send and receive sensitive documents like passport scans securely and easily, allowing them to control how the file is stored and used.

Identity theft is a huge problem worldwide. 1/3 of Americans have been victims, while in the UK it’s estimated to cost £2.5bn a year.

Yet employers, landlords, and even AirBnBs routinely ask people to email scans of passports, driving licenses, bank statements, and other sensitive documents that can be used to steal someone’s identity.

Email isn’t secure, and often the scans are just left in their inbox indefinitely, or copied to other computer systems which may or may not be hackable.

It’s ridiculous. But it’s also understandable as there’s no well-known, easy-to-use way to share sensitive documents securely.

We believe Kloakify can be the WeTransfer of sending sensitive documents.

The market is anyone who’s ever rented an apartment, got a job, taken out an investment, or gone on holiday. Eg. Everyone.

You can use Kloakify as a security-conscious person (and we’ll use marketing to help you become security conscious!!) by buying credits on a pay-as-you-go basis, or companies who regularly need to receive sensitive documents can sign up for a subscription.

About the Founder:

In 2021 my passport scan was hacked from my employer’s servers and sold on the Dark Web. Luckily I’d replaced my passport a few months earlier, after accidentally washing it with my jeans. Thousands weren’t so lucky. I’ve been in tech my whole life (for everyone from Waitrose to the NHS), first as a developer, marketer and designer, then as project manager and CTO.

I’m also an award-winning writer, actor, and theatre director, and wrote a best-selling book on Web design.

Juliet Little

Founder of Juliet Little Coaching & Good Little Journals

What’s your business and the story behind it:

Juliet Little Coaching. Jules Little, an ACC, ICF accredited coach, speaker, and journal maker, is driven by a passion for growth and transformative change. Based in Guernsey, she provides bespoke coaching services and dynamic workshops designed to empower individuals and businesses to navigate life's challenges and align their actions with their values. Her approach combines practical, personalised coaching with motivational speaking, fostering personal and corporate wellness and productivity.

Jules's insights into human potential were notably shaped by her time at The Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco, where she engaged with global sporting legends. This experience has reinforced her belief in the inherent potential within all of us to lead fulfilling lives, a principle that infuses her coaching and speaking engagements. Alongside illustrator and designer Ellie Good, she co-founded Good Little Journals, beginning with the award-winning 'Sleep and Rest' journal. These journals are crafted as a daily practice designed to transform knowledge into habits, employing the science of consistent marginal gains to achieve remarkable results with ease.

Juliet Little, known as Jules, combines deep-seated passion with extensive experience as an ICF ACC accredited life coach to empower others towards personal and professional growth.

She launched her entrepreneurial career with Squeeze Me, a smoothie business that flourished across the UK, serving major retailers like Selfridges, Ocado, and Waitrose. Together with Ellie Good, Jules co-founded Good Little Journals, producing development-focused journals, starting with their award-winning "Sleep and Rest" journal.

As a speaker, Jules leverages her business insight and coaching expertise to deliver workshops and presentations on achieving marginal gains and consistent improvement across various life aspects. Residing in Guernsey, her experiences with global sporting legends inspire her commitment to unlocking potential in others by cultivating habits that empower exceptional lives.

What’s your business and the story behind it:

We want to put data at the heart of businesses. Our aim is to help businesses succeed through use of data and technology.

We will do this by offering 4 pillars of services:

We can help eradicate inefficiencies by automating processes. Increase profits using insights from models and analytics dashboards.

Our website will contain case studies of successful projects and we will have a brand awareness and marketing campaign, and we can upskill the workforce to succeed with data. We can work with businesses, big and small, in any industry – where there is data, we can help.

About the Founder:
Originally from Guernsey, I pursued a Physics degree followed by a Data Science master's in London. Joining the graduate program at Jaguar Land Rover propelled my career as a Data Engineer and after working in the industry for 5 years I am seizing the opportunity to launch my own data consultancy in the Channel Islands. 
I have always been most passionate about seeing the impact data work on business growth which is why delivering value with data is the core of Concise.

I have just completed a 3-year contract with the Guernsey Retail Group as Head of Retail Development, which means that I have taken my foot off the accelerator a little with my own business. So, I'm delighted to be part of the Start-Up Academy to work with other entrepreneurs and see what more I can do to promote my business digitally.

I am a writer, trainer, and consultant specialising in wellbeing-driven productivity and professional development. I help ambitious professionals be more productive without sacrificing their well-being through expert-led education and training.

I'm developing a series of productivity blueprints – short, practical learning guides that solve well-being and productivity problems quickly without any fluff or unnecessary content. 

About the Founder:
Martine Ellis is a leading expert in wellbeing-driven productivity, committed to helping ambitious professionals achieve success without sacrificing their mental health and wellbeing.

Following a successful senior leadership career in finance, Martine retrained as a teacher. Although fulfilling, this career change initially led to burnout. By adopting a wellbeing-first mindset and developing effective productivity strategies, she thrived for the rest of her 15-year education career, the latter half of which was spent leading professional development and teacher education.

Today, Martine uses her extensive experience to support a diverse professional audience, offering practical strategies that ensure success without compromising mental health and wellbeing.

Viviane Kemgne

Our in-house personal trainer, Niall Kamworth, currently serves his customers by offering personal training sessions aimed at working professionals who may be in their prime at work, but not necessarily in fitness. We have progressive training packages available for individuals to a small group and online personal training plans for remote customers.

Our aim is to overcome our customer’s barriers to a healthier lifestyle by offering a PT plan that achieves their fitness goal of either weight loss or muscle gain. We add value by customising our approach to achieve these goals, whether that be in-person or online.

We're also looking to offer digital solutions to qualified personal trainers looking to grow their own business, by leveraging our existing tools and experience.

About the Founder:
I am ACCA qualified with a BSc(Hons) International Business, Finance and Economics degree with around 7 experience in finance. I developed my determination and drive for running a business since my IBFE degree in Manchester, which I applied as an auditor and tax specialist to understand what it takes to run a successful and sustainable business.
Furthermore, my commitment and dedication to playing netball for nearly 16 years has translated into my go-getter attitude, passion for learning and leadership skills.

With over a decade of experience working in a gym as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, Niall is best suited to understand his customers' pain points, from both sides.
That’s why he embarked on creating his own fitness business to lead by example, as he’s passionate about extending the lifecycle of a PT.
He has accumulated a variety of experience from working in Manchester City to now at Revolution Gym. He also has a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.

Warren Mauger

Founder of News Oasis

What’s your business and the story behind it:

We aim to reimagine the delivery of local news across the UK, we want to harness the developments made possible using AI and focus journalists on creating proper investigated news while AI can deliver the business as usual updates from Press Releases and announcements.

We aim to change the business model from being reliant on advertising revenue to user pays for content and potentially individual funding of investigative reporting.

About the Founder:
I have been running a media business for 20 years in video production. This has been both in the Channel Islands and Internationally. Prior to this, I spent five years as an onscreen Journalist  ITV Channel Islands.
